Our Baby Girl was diagnosed with Galactosemia when she was a couple of weeks old. This is a disease that is caught in the newborn screening testing that is done at the hospital. It is a inherited disease and this means that both my husband and I are carriers. None of our other children have the disease. She has been on a restricted diet since she was a tiny thing. She couldn't have anything that has galactose or lactose in it. If you ever get bored, try looking up all of the foods that have either of those in its contents! Pretty much EVERYTHING that we eat around here! So, we have spent a lot of time praying over the last 11 months as we looked forward to her "milk challenge" that would pump her body with galactose and lactose and then she would have a blood panel done to see how her body reacted to the galactose and lactose. Well, she passed the test!!!! woo-hoo. She was diagnosed with a variant form of the disease that is called Duarte Galactosemia...so my girl is a Duarte!
