Well, it is 4:30 AM and I have been up for an hour. "Why?" might you ask. Well, the dern dogs have barked off and on most of the night. John got up a couple of times as did I. Luke was barking at what I thought was our sprinkler system (forgot to out it on rain delay). He was on the chain so that he wasn't out wondering the neighborhood, so I decided to let him off so that he could go see that it was just the sprinklers running and maybe he would be quiet. So, off to bed I went...again. Then the barking started AGAIN...but this time it was Rudy in his serious dog voice. I opened the back door and I could hear Luke whining at the back gate...arghhh...I slid on Savannah's crocs this time because earlier while I had let Luke off the chain, I was barefoot...I walked across the porch, in the DARK, (remember that later in the post!!!) scolding Luke in my quiet, whisper, "I am mad at you voice" and then I let him in. He ran to a chair on the porch and I scolded him again to get over here to the chain! Rudy, too, went to look at that chair, so I thought that maybe a possum was there. I squatted to look under the chair, and this is what I saw:
Oh my...THAT is a SNAKE!!!! A VERY large snake! As I walked back to the house, Rudy was practically "Pushing" me into the house with his head. It was sweet, he was protecting "Momma". I was calm and went straight into the house and woke up my soundly sleeping husband..."John.....John...there is a HUGE snake coiled up on the porch." His reply "did you see it?" (no I didn't see it I just knew it was there!?!?!) He quickly popped up out of bed and got dressed. I then heard him loading his SHOTGUN...what??? You can't shoot the snake in the corner on the back porch with a shotgun at 4 in the morning!!!! His plan was to drag it out and then shoot it. He loaded his gun ALL the way. I was freaking out inside...John with a shotgun on MY backporch and a VERY large snake are two of my scariest thoughts!!!
He decided that he should call our local police department so that when he did shoot the gun and ALL of our neighbors were calling the cops, they would know what was going on. He also hoped that maybe they had someone who could come "take care of it". Sure enough, that is something that they do. So, while we waited for them to come, John and the animals...2 dogs and 2 cats held the snake prisoner on the back porch.
The nicest officer showed up with his snake grabbing thing and had that snake in our front yard in no time! He let John do the honors of chopping its head off! It was long. When he held it up with that grabbing thing I got to see how long...like 4 or more feet long!!!! Have I mentioned that I HATE snakes????? So, kudos to the Keller Police Department....my tax dollars were at work tonight and I am grateful. I am also grateful that I did not step on that snake!
I am trying NOT to think about the fact that my two-year-old was playing out there tonight ALL over the yard while I sat in THAT chair and watched!
I am trying NOT to think about the fact that Luke was sniffing something along the darkness of my feet on the 2nd occasion for me to go hush him and I fussed at him!
I am trying NOT to think about the two LARGE snakes that I have run over in the last week or so on a nearby street and have gone back to hit them AGAIN and AGAIN to make sure that they are dead!
I AM going to try to go rest my excited wound up head.....see, I am always saying, "there is never a dull moment around here!"
Here's a Recap...

AHHH! I'm so glad you didn't get bit. I had the same thing happen last week when I was mowing with the push mower. It ran out in front of me. Of course, Keith was at work, so dad came and killed it. I hate going out in the grass at night now. Any idea what kind it was?
What a good dog! He wouldn't give up even when you were scolding him. I deserves a large bone today!
Maddie just said, "I bet after Jennifer ran over that snake, it decided to follow her car." See, that's what you get for running over all those snakes on bancroft...they didn't die, they followed you home! :)
are you sure you did not marry brant? oh no brant would have fired! glad you are all okay!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I'm so grossed out right now!!!! I love the picture with John and his shotgun. Shotguns are the solutions to lots of problems in Texas!
What kind of snake was it??
What a man's man, that John! A shotgun!
BTW, congrats on 14 years!!!
